Hi, I'm Teri Carter, of Saddlebrook Stables, in Castle Hayne, North Carolina, and today, I'm going to talk to you about the thoroughbred horse. Thoroughbred horses were originally bred for race horses. They are bred for endurance and to be able to run long distances. They can run anywhere from three-quarters to two miles on the track, nonstop, at top speed. Thoroughbreds also have found their way into the hunter-jumper world, especially horses that haven't quite had what they need to have on the track. They've found their way into the hunter-jumper barns, because they're quite athletic and they have the endurance to jump large fences and jump courses; plus, they're quite tall, leggy, and pretty to watch in the hunter ring. Your thoroughbred horse is usually very tall, and got lots of leg, and has a very long stride, with high withers, and they usually....This one is quite nice, but some thoroughbred horses are a little more excitable than your other breeds of horses, so they are more geared towards your English line of riding, rather than your western pleasure.
