A horse curry comb or brush is often used to remove an unwanted winter coat from dirty or shedding horses. Find out how to use a curry comb in a circular motion on a horse with help from an equestrian riding instructor in this video on horse grooming.
Hello, my name is Chelsey Sawtell, Primary Riding Instructor at Black Friar Farm in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. And today, we are going to be discussing the curry brush, how to use it, why you use it and the effects if you don't. There are many different shapes, sizes and materials of curry combs. Today, we will be using rubber with a medium bite for short coated horse. There are other kinds of curry combs available; metal spiral ones, looping shedding blades, thick nap rubber and soft rubber. There are multiple uses for curry comb. The metal and shedding blades are often use to remove unwanted winter coat from exceptionally dirty, muddy or shedding horses. In this instance, we are using a rubber curry with a medium nap to remove any dirt, scurf or dander from the horse's skin to distribute it through the coat where it can later be brushed away with the dandy brush. This will distribute the oils throughout the horses coat, stimulate the skin and promote a healthy shiny coat on your horse. The curry combs are use in a circular motion over the body of the horse. Begin at the neck and rub in a circular motion, pulling up any dirt, dander and scurf that maybe up against the horse's skin. Move slowly from head to tail, methodically moving with even pressure as you go. Some sensitive horses will twitch or often lean into the curry as it feels good. Repeating in the same circular motion, a long nape, soft curry comb can be used on any sensitive areas such as the face. Be very careful to avoid the eyes and ears. Currying is a good time to inspect your horse for any nits, cuts or scrapes that might require attention. It's also a good time to check the eyes, ears, nose and mucus membranes for any sign of illness. In conclusion, there are various different curry comb materials use for different reasons. Metal shedding blades are often use for heavy coated winter shedding horses that are covered in mud and different strings of rubber curry for the face, body, legs and sensitive areas.
